Use of Steroids in Nose Surgery
How to Provide Fast Recovery After Nose Surgery?
Due to various reactions to anesthesia drugs during nose surgery, low-dose steroids are often used as a routine practice. These low-dose steroids given just before surgery help reduce the side effects of the drugs. Short-acting steroids are known to reduce edema during surgery.
Post-operative inflammation is important for wound healing; it plays a critical role in bone healing in particular. However, excessive inflammation can cause unnecessary damage. Therefore, long-acting steroids or regular short-acting steroid treatments after surgery can affect hormone balance and lead to various problems ranging from changes in the menstrual cycle to Cushing’s syndrome. This situation shows that steroids should be used carefully.
Systemic steroids have many side effects and should only be used when necessary. However, we are looking for an effective way to reduce inflammation. The situation that increases inflammation the most is the periosteal reaction. Reducing this thickening can contribute to the post-operative healing process. For this purpose, I drop two drops of long-acting steroid into the periosteal dissection area. This application provides a reduction in inflammation in that area for about a month. Thus, patients do not complain of enlargement of the nasal base. I observed that patients recovered more quickly after using this method.
